A big part of portrait photography is in the subject that you CHOOSE to photograph.

John Kenny is a great portrait photographer.

“Being a leader gives you charisma” – Seth Godin
I can be shy at times. Hearing this quote makes a lot of sense to me. The more people I meet the easier it becomes to be charismatic.
How do you become a leader? I think you achieve this by being different, by being yourself.
“Inspiration Is for Amateurs—The Rest of Us Just Show Up and Get to Work”
“Inspiration is for amateurs — the rest of us just show up and get to work. And the belief that things will grow out of the activity itself and that you will — through work — bump into other possibilities and kick open other doors that you would never have dreamt of if you were just sitting around looking for a great ‘art idea.’ And the belief that process, in a sense, is liberating and that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel every day. Today, you know what you’ll do, you could be doing what you were doing yesterday, and tomorrow you are gonna do what you did today, and at least for a certain period of time you can just work. If you hang in there, you will get somewhere.”

It is easy to become complacent with your lifestyle especially as artists. Challenge yourself. Do something new. Try a new technique.
What is the business model of our generation?
We know that old bushiness models like industrialization do not work in contemporary times.
I often think about what is the model for our time. Hard to do while we are living in the present but if you can think ahead you will be very successful. What do you think?
“Kill the clock inside your head
And you can get your sleep when you are dead” – Flyleaf
We often put time restraints on ourselves. Time restraints will drive you crazy. Im too young to do this or too old to do that. Just do it.
Drawing from a photo I took over the summer.

You’re only as good as your last pic.
Social networks can be a double edged sword. Reaching out to people can be a good thing but spending to much time doing so can be bad. Balance I guess. I found that I get better results when I spend more time creating. If you do great work then people will make the effort to reach out to you.

Re-invent yourself. Stay fresh. Does your book/port look the same as last year?
I was up late last night watching The Never Ending Story. This is what I made because I couldnt get the idea of a purple buffalo out of my head.

Its easy to dream up fantastical ideas. The trick is to make them believable when you create them. Things can get real corny real quick.

Watching the never ending story. Where has the imagination gone? Are we being consumed by the nothing? Got me thinking.

I always feel like I NEED to be doing something productive but sometimes is good to take some time off.
Read an interesting book called The Conditions of Success: How the Modern Artists Rises to Fame by Alan Bowness. The book is actually a lecture manuscript but it had some good themes.
The book describes the Four Successive Circles. Steps or hoops or chambers an artist must overcome to achieve success.
- Peer Recognition
- Critical Recognition
- Patronage by Art Dealers
- Public Acclaim
The book is really hard to find for some reason so if come across it for a good price you should pick it up.

Watching the Prince of Egypt again…
I was told that I was a control freak. Naturally I took offense and rejected the term. A control freak is a negative or can be seen as a negative trait. I soon realized that I am indeed a control freak after reading Mastery by Robert Greene
I want to control my own life. In order to gain control of you own life you have to become a master in your calling.
Hello my name is Glen and I am a control freak. I want control over my own life.

“Everyone who has creativity has a touch of madness.” – Robert Greene
So I decided not to cut my hair ever again. Reminds me of Samson one of my favorite bible stories. I know this goes against social norms but who cares. Am I turning into a hippie?

I have an idea but its gonna require a little post production. Now do I find the right person to shoot or do I recycle an old image?

Mad information in those unnoticed tones. Thats why you can have an emotional reaction to a black and white photo and not understand why.

Things are taken for granted and go unnoticed. Like the millions of tones found in a black and white photo.

People always ask why my photos are shot in black and white. Staring to think it comes from my black and white drawings days.
